Indianapolis’ Sycamore School proved once again to have the state’s top middle school problem solvers, coming out on top in the competitive Indiana MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.  The event is sponsored by the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers to promote mathematics among today's teenagers to pave the way for tomorrow's mathematicians, engineers and scientists.

State MATHCOUNTS Champions: The Sycamore School won the Indiana MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Members of the team were (from left) Coach Trent Tormoehlen, Claudia Huang, Chad Qian, Patrick Tan, Yushi Homma and Coach Robert Fischer.

Sycamore School, captured top honors for the second time in the past three years, had four of the top eight individual finishers -- all being eighth graders and veteran MATHCOUNTS participants.  Yushi Homma led the way with a second place finish, followed by Patrick Tan, sixth; Chad Qian, seventh; and Claudia Huang, eighth.  The team was coached by Trent Tormoehlen and Robert Fischer.

The Indiana MATHCOUNTS competition had 196 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from 46 middle schools showcasing their mathematics skills.  Students participated in three rounds of competition: Sprint, testing quickness to solve problems; Target, testing problem-solving skills; and Team, testing teamwork abilities.  The top 24 finishers advanced to the Countdown Round, a game show-type competition which didn’t factor into the final individual or team scores.

Creekside Middle School of Carmel finished a strong second to Sycamore School in the team standings.  Eighth grader David Liang paved the way for Creekside with a fourth place finish.  Other team members were eighth grader Kenny Smith, who placed 11th; seventh grader Willie Zhu, 19th; and seventh grader Chrishan Fernando.  The team was coached by Angela Moreman and Karma Hamachek.

Going To Nationals: Representing Indiana in the National MATHCOUNTS competition in May will be (from left) Coach Robert Fischer of Sycamore School, Mark Sellke of Klondike Middle School, Yushi Homma of Sycamore School, Jerry Ma of West Lafayette Junior High School, David Liang of Creekside Middle School and Coach Trent Tormoehlen of Sycamore School.

Two teams from West Lafayette took home the next two team places.  West Lafayette Junior High School was third, with Jerry Ma finishing third and Beilin Li in fourth in the individual standings.  Phoebe Moh was 17th and Ryan Kim placed 23rd to help the team, coached by Pam Porterfield and Patricia Hufford.

Meanwhile, eighth grader Mark Sellke of West Lafayette’s Klondike Middle School earned top individual honors for the second consecutive year.  He had a perfect score in the sprint round of the competition.  That performance helped Klondike earn fourth-place honors.  Other team members were Ana and Nikhil Carneiro, and Melinda Liu.  JoAnn Ward was the team’s coach.

Rounding out the award-winning teams were Riverside Middle School of Fishers, fifth; and Schumucker Middle School of Mishawaka, sixth.  Seventh grader George Theodorakis led Riverside with a 12th place finish.  Other team members were eighth grader Jake Patterson, and seventh graders Thomas Ritz and Josh Woodward.  The team was coached by Craig Blossom.  Schumucker was led by eighth grader Seunghwan Kwak, who was 16th.  The team also featured eighth graders Alberte Eskildsen, Timothy Liu and Emily Song.  The coach was John Rice.

Mathletes In Action: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Hulbert Arena of the Sports and Recreation Center was covered with nearly 200 of Indiana's top middle school students during the state's MATHCOUNTS competition on March 13.

Sellke will join Homma, Ma and Liang in representing Indiana at the National MATHCOUNTS competition at Walt Disney World in Orlando during early May.  Selke, Homma and Liang were members of the state team as seventh graders -– and placed sixth.

“Indiana is taking a very talented team of problem solvers to the nationals,” stated Fischer, who will serve as the team’s co-coach.

The Indiana MATHCOUNTS rewards students for showcasing their academic talents.  Rose-Hulman awarded $10,000 scholarships to Sellke and Huang for being the top male and female finishers.  Purdue University will present scholarships to the top 10 students.

The MATHCOUNTS program is sponsored by the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers, Raytheon and Rose-Hulman.  Patricia Behrens of Eli Lilly and Company and Gary Staats of Zurich Services-North America were the competition coordinators for ISPE.  Indiana State University Mathematics Professor Henjin Chi was the chief judge.  Rose-Hulman Mathematics Professor Elton Graves coordinated activities for Rose-Hulman, being assisted by professors Bill Eccles, John Rickert, Steve Galinaitis and Cara Brooks, and Mathematics Department Secretary Jodi Daugherty.  Members of Rose-Hulman Pi Mu Epsilon mathematics society and other mathematics students helped as competition graders.
