| Honored Educator: Sean Bird of Indianapolis' Covenant Christian High School
received the Samuel F. Hulbert Outstanding Teacher Award. Presenting the honor
was Patsy Brackin, professor of mechanical engineering and a member of Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology's Honors & Awards Committee. |
High School Teacher and Counselor Honored
Rose-Hulman also recognized a teacher and counselor for impacting the lives of
students at their schools. Sean Bird, a mathematics and physics teacher at
Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis, received the Samuel F. Hulbert
Outstanding Teacher Award. Meanwhile, Janet Kent, dean of students at the Utica
Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology in Sterling Heights, Mich.,
received the Charles G. Howard Outstanding Counselor Award.
Bird’s classroom style incorporates technological advances in calculators and
smart boards, and he has given national presentations on both topics.
Unforgettable demonstrations highlight Bird’s teaching resume. One colleague
stated: “It is not uncommon to see bowling balls flying through the room.” He is
the founder and sponsor for the school’s rocketry team, and participates in
numerous other extracurricular programs, including making a guest appearance in
the school musical.
