‘Top of the Class’ Students among More Than 90 Persons Recognized at Honors and Awards Banquet

Top Sophomore Academic Honor: Joseph Ausserer, a junior mechanical engineering major, received the Paul N. Bogart Prize for having achieved the highest grade point average following the sophomore year in 2007-08. Presenting the award was Art Western, vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students joined high school educators in being honored during the college's annual Honors and Awards Ceremony in May. More than 90 persons were recognized at the special event.

Outstanding students from each academic department received awards for academic achievement, service or leadership potential. (See List Below) Students having the highest grade point average at the end of the freshman, sophomore and junior years were presented special academic awards.

Evan Breedlove, a mechanical engineering major from St. Charles, Ill., received the Carl Wischmeyer Award for having the highest grade point average following the junior year (2007-08). Named Carl Wischmeyer Scholars for high academic achievement following the junior year were Stephen Nease, an electrical engineering major from Germantown, Tenn.,; Levi Rupp, a double major in chemistry and biochemistry and molecular biology from Archbold, Ohio; and Jason Sauppe, a double major in computer science and mathematics from Avon Lake, Ohio.

Joseph Ausserer, a junior mechanical engineering major from Dayton, Ohio, received the Paul N. Bogart Prize for having the highest grade point average following the sophomore year (2007-08). Paul Bogart Scholar Awards were bestowed upon Matthew Cox, a mechanical engineering major from Russiaville, Ind.; Brian Kiraly, an engineering physics major from Granger, Ind.; and Micah Weaver, a senior computer science major from Lebanon, Ind.

 
Top Freshman Academic Honor: Clark Moser, a sophomore biomedical engineering major, received the Heminway Bronze Medal for having achieved the highest grade point average following the freshman year in 2007-08. Presenting the award was Art Western, vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty.
Clark Moser, a sophomore biomedical engineering major from Elwood, Ind., earned the Heminway Bronze Medal for having the highest grade point average following the freshman year (2007-08).

Named Heminway Scholars were sophomores Amanda Barnett, a physics major from Mooresville, Ind.; Russell Bennett, a mechanical engineering major from Shelbyville, Ind.; Eric Crockett, a computer science major from Georgetown, Ind.; John McLaughlin, a biomedical engineering major from Newburgh, Ind.; Jordan Milligan, a chemical engineering major from Westfield, Ind.; Michael Pridal-LoPiccolo, a computer science major from Columbia, Mo.; Nicholas Race, a biomedical engineering major from Martinsville, Ind.; Clancy Soehren, an electrical engineering major from Edinburgh, Ind.; Annmarie Stanley, a computer engineering major from Warrenville, Ill.; Jonathon Strauser, a biomedical engineering major from Carmel, Ind.; and Kyle Wilson, a mechanical engineering major from Dublin, Ohio.



 
Honored Educator: Sean Bird of Indianapolis' Covenant Christian High School received the Samuel F. Hulbert Outstanding Teacher Award. Presenting the honor was Patsy Brackin, professor of mechanical engineering and a member of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Honors & Awards Committee.
High School Teacher and Counselor Honored

Rose-Hulman also recognized a teacher and counselor for impacting the lives of students at their schools. Sean Bird, a mathematics and physics teacher at Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis, received the Samuel F. Hulbert Outstanding Teacher Award. Meanwhile, Janet Kent, dean of students at the Utica Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology in Sterling Heights, Mich., received the Charles G. Howard Outstanding Counselor Award.

Bird’s classroom style incorporates technological advances in calculators and smart boards, and he has given national presentations on both topics. Unforgettable demonstrations highlight Bird’s teaching resume. One colleague stated: “It is not uncommon to see bowling balls flying through the room.” He is the founder and sponsor for the school’s rocketry team, and participates in numerous other extracurricular programs, including making a guest appearance in the school musical.

Bird was nominated by Matt Singletary, a former student and current Rose-Hulman mechanical engineering major.

 
Honored For Service: Janet Kent, dean of students at Utica Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology, received the Charles G. Howard Outstanding Counselor Award. Presenting the honor was James Goecker, vice president for enrollment management.
Kent’s service to students in the Utica Community Schools extends over 33 years as a French teacher and guidance counselor. She has spent the last five years at the center for mathematics, science and technology. She served as mentor for the school’s 2006 World Champion FIRST Robotics Team, the “ThunderChickens.” Kent earned a bachelor’s degree in French secondary education from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Oakley University (Mich.).

The educators’ awards were named in honor of Hulbert, former president of Rose-Hulman, and Howard, former dean of admissions.
