Zimmerman, Richard Thai, and Tan Lin. In the back row (from left)
are Mathematics Professor Cara Brooks, Becky Fehribach of Rose-Hulman's
Pi Mu Epsilon math fraternity, Greg Tourville, Robert Moore, Spencer
Carver, Martin Novick and Mathematics Professor John Rickert. |
Katie Greenwald, a mechanical engineering major from San Mateo, Calif.,
earned top honors among students participating in the 21st Alfred R. Schmidt
Freshman Mathematics Competition during the fall academic quarter. She was
recognized by the Department of Mathematics during the college's recent
homecoming, and received a book, a copy of the Mathematical Association of
America's Math Horizons magazine and cash prize.
The competition was conducted on Sept. 15 with 29 students attempting to
solve six problems in a two-hour period.
Sharing second place honors were Emily Graetz, a software engineering major
from Dayton, Ohio; and Greg Tourville, a computer science major from Hoffman
Estates, Ill. Two students from China tied for third place: Guangun Wang, an
electrical engineering major, and Congnan Zheng, a computer science major.
All students received academic literature and minor cash prizes.
Meritorious mention honors were presented to Spencer Carver, a physics major
from Gurnee, Ill.; James Folberth, a physics major from Delaware, Ohio;
Robert French, a chemical engineering major from Dayton, Ohio; Robert Moore,
a physics major from Dallas; Alex Morelli, a physics major from Ozark, Mo.;
Donnie Quamme, a mechanical engineering major from Lancaster, Ohio; and
Kurtis Zimmerman, a computer science major from Shelbyville, Ind. Each
received a copy of Math Horizons and a minor cash prize.
Honorable mention was awarded to Alex Audretsch, a mechanical engineering
major from Bloomington, Ind.; Yile Gu, a chemical engineering major from
China; Greg Larmore, a computer engineering major from Deerfield, Ill.;
Martin Novick, a chemical engineering major from Taiwan; Shaine Strullmyer,
a computer science major from Farina, Ill.; and Sierra Ward, a mathematics
major from Nixa, Mo. Each received a copy of Math Horizons and minor cash
prize.
Also receiving a copy of Math Horizons and recognized for participating were
James Foulkes, Samad Jawaid, Chad Kalis, Tan Lin, Chase Mathison, Meilissa
Montgomery, Nicole Richardson, Jake Sheard, Jacki Simon, Christopher Stine
and Richard Thai.
The competition was started in 1989 to honor of Schmidt, who taught
mathematics at Rose-Hulman from 1949-95.
This year's contest problems were compiled by Rose-Hulman mathematics
faculty members Cara Brooks and John Rickert, and the students' answers were
graded by Alberto Condori, Mike DaVasher, Brooks and John Rickert.
