For
the
second
straight
year,
Rose-Hulman
Institute
of
Technology
seniors
posted
a 90
percent-or-better
passing
rate
on
the
Fundamentals
of
Engineering
Exam.
 |
Exceptional Scholars: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students, like 2008 applied biology graduate Cherie Garvis, excel in the classroom and laboratory throughout their academic careers. |
The
2008
engineering
graduates
had
a 91
percent
passing
rate,
considerably
higher
than
the
national
rate
for
all
engineering
institutions,
according
to
statistics
reported
by
campus
test
coordinator
Jim
McKinney,
the
Roland
Hutchins
Distinguished
Professor
of
Civil
Engineering.
"Our
students'
success
rate
at
passing
this
exam
is
the
best
indicator
of
Rose-Hulman's
commitment
to
excellence
in
engineering education,"
stated
Rose-Hulman
President
Gerald
S.
Jakubowski,
former
national
president
of
American
Society
for
Engineering
Education
and
chair
of
the
Engineering
Accreditation
Commission
of
ABET.
"It's
a
credit
to
each
of
the
students,
and
for
the
institute,
it
is
especially
impressive
when
you
know
that,
compared
to
other
engineering
schools,
a
far
greater
percentage
of
eligible
Rose-Hulman
students
actually
take
the
Fundamentals
of
Engineering
exam.
In
other
words,
we
are
diving
deeper
into
our
pool,
and
still
coming
up
with
these
excellent
results."
The
FE
exam
is
the
first
of
two
examinations
engineers
must
pass
in
order
to
be
certified
as a
professional
engineer.
The
exam
is
eight
hours
and
is
split
into
a
four-hour
morning
session
and
a
four-hour
afternoon
session.
The
morning
session
is a
120-question
general
exam
for
all
examinees.
The
afternoon
session
consists
of
60
questions
and
is
more
discipline-oriented.
The
April,
2008,
national
FE
passing
average
for
first-time
exam
testers
who
attended
ABET-accredited
college/university
engineering
programs
was
63
percent,
according
to
the
National
Council
of
Examiners
for
Engineering
and
Surveying.
The
2008
passing
rate
for
Rose-Hulman
seniors
was
slightly
lower
than
the
94
percent
rate
achieved
in
2007.
However,
it
ranks
among
the
top
six
rates
in
Institute
history.
A
total
of
288
Rose-Hulman
students
took
the
exam
on
campus
this
spring.
A
breakdown
of
the
FE
passing
rate
by
academic
department
for
first-time
test
takers
was
(national
April
rate):
Biomedical
engineering,
86
percent
(87
percent);
chemical
engineering,
100
percent
(86

civil
engineering,
