High Profile Exhibit: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's
Challenge X bio-diesel sport utility vehicle was the focus of
attention for fans attending the Nov. 4 Indianapolis Colts-New
England Patriots National Football League game at the RCA Dome
in downtown Indianapolis. Hundreds of NFL fans viewed the
vehicle at the display that was part of the pre-game tailgate
party outside the stadium. |
The team recently was presented the competition's
marketing award, along with $2,500, for developing the best strategy to
market the vehicle and its participation on the competition.
The award was recently presented to Challenge X team members Ashley
Erffmeyer, a senior mechanical engineering major and outreach
coordinator; and Corena Herniter, the team's outreach adviser.
Rose-Hulman received the Outstanding Outreach Award after concluding the
third year of the Challenge X: Crossover to Sustainable Mobility
competition. The Challenge X team's marketing and
outreach programs have used various strategies to raise awareness about
critical energy and transportation-related issues throughout North
America. The team focused their outreach efforts on K-12 students,
community events and local news media. Community outreach efforts
included a public education display outside the RCA Dome before the Nov.
4 Indianapolis Colts-New England Patriots' football game; campus
education displays during homecoming and Dad's Day; and programs at
Wabash Valley civic groups. On Oct. 29, the modified
Challenge X competition Chevy Equinox SUVs from Rose-Hulman and
University of Tennessee were displayed at the U.S. Department of
Energy's Day of Science at the Knoxville Convention Center, an event
that was attended by over 1,600 persons. Team members that participated
included Matthew Lipkowitz, a senior mechanical engineering major;
Robert Warden, a junior mechanical engineering major; Rebecca Winer, a
junior mechanical engineering major; and Herniter.
