Alumnus Zack Pieri Featured as ‘Face of GM’, EcoCAR Project Mentor
August 2, 2013
Helpful Advice: Zach Pieri, a 2007 mechanical engineering alumnus, is the General Motors’ mentor for Rose-Hulman’s EcoCAR 2 team. He is a diagnostic calibration engineer.
Mechanical engineering alumnus Zack Pieri has always been passionate about education and advanced transportation. The son of a mechanical engineering professor was a member of Rose-Hulman’s Challenge X vehicle development team before graduating in 2007.
Now a diagnostic calibration engineer for General Motors, Pieri has been able to combine his passions in engineering and education by helping to advise the next generation of engineers in the EcoCAR: Plugging into the Future competition. He is the mentor for Rose-Hulman’s team competing with 15 other colleges in the EcoCAR 2 challenge, and joined students at the Year 2 Finals at the GM West Proving Grounds near Yuma, Arizona.
"I jumped at the opportunity," Pieri says. "As a GM mentor, my main responsibility is to provide the students with just enough information from GM so that they can do anything they want to do. We handed them very complex and advanced vehicles, and our job is to make sure (students) integrate their ideas into GM products."
Pieri is featured as one of the "Faces of GM," a video project that highlights how he has helped Rose-Hulman students integrate their ideas into GM vehicles. Also, there are some scenes from this year’s Year 2 Finals in which Rose-Hulman’s vehicle was one of the few completing road testing at the proving grounds.

"I have a passion for teaching and learning. GM's participation in advanced vehicle competitions has given me the opportunity to pass along my enthusiasm," Pieri states. "The greatest thing I can do is help these kids get into positions where they can say ‘I love what I do every day of the year."
Rose-Hulman EcoCAR2 team members appreciate the opportunity getting valuable advice from an Advanced Transportation System (ATS) program alumnus.
"Zack has been an invaluable mentor and friend to our students. He can identify with the many pressures that our team members encounter as students and participants in our advanced transportation program," says Zac Chambers, PhD, EcoCAR2 Team Advisor and ATS program director.
