Students, Faculty Help Surgeons Examine New Orthopaedic Techniques

A partnership with physicians at the Joint Replacement Surgeons of Indiana (JRSI) Foundation has helped Rose-Hulman students, faculty, and staff members examine new surgical techniques in partial knee replacement and mechanical deformation of acetabular cups in hip replacement surgery.
The research was conducted at the Orthopaedic Biomedical Engineering Laboratory in John T. Myers Hall. These experiences for seven undergraduate students and two graduate students included directed research during the 2011-12 academic year and summer internships.
Four peer-reviewed medical journal publications were accepted from the laboratory in 2012, and research from the lab was presented at the national 2012 Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) and American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons meetings. Another project will be presented at the 2013 ORS meeting this month in San Antonio, Texas.
JRSI Engineering Director Scott Small, a 2005 mechanical engineering alumnus, presented three years of Rose-Hulman student research at Oxford University in England during the Global Oxford Masters Symposium on partial knee arthroplasty.
Faculty assisting in the research projects were biomedical engineering professors Renee Rogge and Christine Buckley. Rogge took an educational sabbatical from teaching to direct student projects and develop medical imaging and finite element analysis research initiatives.
Students participating in laboratory research in 2011-12 were biomedical engineering Allan Che, Paige Cook, Kevin Farley, Kelli Greenberg, Betsy Jones, Amanda Kingman, Emily Lakes, Audrey Niverson, and Brian Sutterer.
Alumni authoring journal articles and making national presentations from their undergraduate research projects were Leah Howard and Didem Tunc, 2010 biomedical engineering graduates; Derek Archer and Jordan Oja, 2012 biomedical engineering graduates; and Susumu Tokunaga, who earned a master’s degree in biomedical engineering in 2010.
Research projects conducted in the Orthopaedic Biomedical Engineering Laboratory were assisted by partnerships with key medical device manufacturers Biomet, Stryker, and DePuy. Grants supporting the students’ work came from the Lookout Foundation, the VWR Foundation, Jack Ragle, Rose-Hulman’s Interdisciplinary Research Collaborative, Joseph and Reba Weaver Undergraduate Research Program, and Rose-Hulman’s Independent Project/Research Opportunities Program.
