Different Perspectives: Terrell L. Strayhorn, director of The Ohio State University’s Center for Higher Education Enterprise, has written the book “College Students’ Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success.”

Researcher and scholar Terrell L. Strayhorn will discuss the key elements for student success in higher education during a Diversity Speaker Series program on Monday, April 3, at Rose-Hulman.

Open to the public, the session will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Room M-137 of Myers Hall, located on the east side of campus. It is free, but advance reservations can be made here or calling 812-877-8616.

Strayhorn has a distinguished career as professor of higher education at The Ohio State University, and immediate past director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise. He also is a faculty affiliate in the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, the Todd A. Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male and the Criminal Justice Research Center.

Named one of country’s top diversity scholars by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, Strayhorn is the author of “College Students’ Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success.”

Strayhorn’s expertise centers on assessing student learning and development outcomes, and understanding factors that are key to the success of historically underrepresented, misrepresented and otherwise vulnerable student populations in education. His research has focused on issues of race, class and gender, and the experiences of racial/ethnic minorities, college men, economically disadvantaged individuals and other marginalized groups in education.

Strayhorn’s higher education background includes being the founding director of OSU’s Center for Inclusion, Diversity & Academic Success and chief diversity officer within the College of Education and Human Ecology. He previously was special assistant to the provost at the University of Tennessee and was the founding director of UT’s Center for Higher Education Research & Policy. Strayhorn earned a bachelor’s degree in music and religious studies from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree in educational policy studies at Virginia, and doctorate in higher education, specializing in race and social policy, at Virginia Tech.
