Problem Solvers: Recognized for their award-winning entries in this year's Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition were (front row, from left) Wyatt Smith, Matthew Moon (second place), Zihang Xu (first place), Jiaye Su (third place), and Casey Garner. In the back row (from left) are Zibo Wang, Tianhong Han, Zhen Ni, Adit Suvarna, Mathematics professor John Rickert, John Lambrecht, Aaron Wilson, Zheng Fu, and Zelong Liu.

Engineering physics student Zihang Xu earned first-place honors among Rose-Hulman students attempting to solve six challenging problems in the 27th Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition, conducted during the fall academic quarter.

Xu, from Shanghai, China, had the most correct answers within the two-hour testing period. He received a book, a subscription to Math Horizons magazine, and $20.

Matthew Moon, a computer engineering student from Fairport, New York, earned the second-place prize: $10, a Math Horizons subscription, and a book.

Tying for third place were Bochuan Lu, a computer science student from Beijing, China; Jiaye Su, a student with an undeclared major from Shanghai; and Muqing Zheng, a mathematics major from Ningbo, China. Each student received a book, a Math Horizons subscription, and $5.

Earning meritorious mention for their solutions were Jindong Chen, Tranhong Han, Zelong Liu, Zhen Ni, Adit Suvarna, and Zibo Wang. Honorable mention honors were given to Zheng Fu, Casey Garner, John Lambrecht, Wyatt Smith, and Jianing Zheng. Each student received a Math Horizons subscription and a cash prize. Also participating and receiving Math Horizons subscriptions were Ryan Bailey and Aaron Wilson.

The annual competition was started in 1989 to honor Schmidt, a 1949 Rose-Hulman graduate who served as a mathematics professor at his alma mater from 1949 to 1995.

The problems were compiled by Scott Kominers, a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows, and Rose-Hulman Associate Professor of Mathematics John Rickert. Tests were reviewed and graded by mathematics professors Sylvia Carlisle, Will Green, Mark Panaggio, and Rickert.
