(((((((Greetings, One of my students, Andrea J. Anderson, will be submitting a paper "A special case of Selberg's integral" for your consideration. Below is my letter of support.
In order for an undergraduate to have a paper published in our journal, we require that a mathematician write a letter of support. The letter is to include:
your association with the student. For example, were you the student's supervisor for the project which generated the work or did the student simply ask you to look at the paper after the work was completed.
Ms Anderson's research problem arose as part of my work on invariant polynomials and differential operators as described in the introduction to the paper. I thought that this problem would be a good one for an undergraduate student and we proposed this project for a Zivnuska Scholarship (that funds such things) and for some summer support from our (UW-Eau Claire) Undergraduate Research program. While I supervised Ms Anderson for this project, she was the one who made the key breakthroughs in the proofs .
your assessment of the paper. We do not require the work to be original, but we do expect the paper to be well-written (with proper references), to be interesting to a wide range of readers, and to have a level of mathematical maturity that is clearly beyond a typical homework assignment.
Some time after we started on this project we discovered that we were evaluating a special case of "Selberg's integral" which can be evaluated using published formulas. The techniques she uses are different from those formulas.
I think the methods she used to solve this problem were insightful. I was assuming that we would "guess" the formulae and then prove it in general by induction or something,
Obviously the paper is very well written.
a statement verifying that the student did the work as an undergraduate.
She did the work as a sophomore. It took her two years to write it up.
your name and address as you would like it to appear in the acknowledgment of the article. You may include your email address if you wish.
