To Whom It May Concern:
Ivan Corwin asked me some time ago to write to you regarding the paper
"Perpendicular Constructions from Interior Points on N-gons" that
he submitted to your journal. I apologize for the delay, which was
completely beyond Ivan's control (it was caused by my being swamped
with work here).
Ivan showed me the main result of his paper last summer at
(Canada/USA) Mathcamp, a five-week residential summer program in mathematics
for very talented high-school students, in which I have taught for the last
several years. I was very much taken with the simplicity and elegance of the
result, and I encouraged him to publish it. Although I suppose I have no
proof
of this, I am entirely convinced that the work in the paper is Ivan's own.
Not only did he do other excellent work at Mathcamp, but he showed himself to
be a student of exceptional initiative and character, and it is inconceivable
to me that he would not acknowledge any substantial help anyone could have
given him. In a recommendation letter to Harvard, where he has now been
admitted
for next year, I wrote about Ivan, among other (positive) things:
"Even among the exceptional group of students at Mathcamp, which for many
of them is the first truly stimulating and intellectually challenging 'peer
group' of like-minded individuals they have ever been exposed to, Ivan stood
out as a particularly clear thinker and highly responsible person with
abundant intellectual energy. In his independent project group he showed
the most initiative and persistence of the four students on his team, despite
his being involved in several other demanding and time-consuming activities
(such as a "Moore method" class on ring theory, in which participants were
expected to develop the material themselves with minimal guidance; I am told
that Ivan did quite well in this setting also).
Ivan has a particular interest in mathematical problem solving and he is
looking forward to participating in the Putnam competition. At Mathcamp he
was one of three students who volunteered to help find and produce problems
for the informal and very popular weekly 'math relays' competition, even
though this meant that he himself could not take part in the relays in
those weeks. Such unobtrusive but actively helpful behavior seems typical
of Ivan."
