Each year the Rose Mathematics department recognizes student achievement through various awards at the annual Rose-Hulman Honors and Awards Banquet held in the spring. The awards recognize a freshman and graduating senior who show outstanding work in mathematics, and we also recognize strong performance in college mathematics competitions. Links to the awards photo albums follow. Below that are the award descriptions and then the list of award winners since 1994-95 is at the bottom of the page.

Award Descriptions

Theodore Paine Palmer Award This award was established in recognition of the dedicated teaching and high standards of Theodore P. Palmer, professor of mathematics from 1937 to 1974. It is awarded by vote of the mathematics faculty to a student or students who have demonstrated excellence in mathematics during the freshman year. This award is not necessarily awarded every year. The recipient receives a book prize and the student's name is engraved on a departmental plaque.

Clarence P. Sousley Award This award was established in memory of Clarence P. Sousley, professor and head of mathematics form 1920 to 1954. It is awarded by vote of the faculty to a graduating senior mathematics major who has demonstrated exceptional performance in his field .This award is not necessarily awarded every year. The recipient receives a book prize and the student's name is engraved on a departmental plaque.

Note: The award has been presented to students who are XX/MA double majors who have made have demonstrated exceptional performance in mathematics and mathematics related activities including mathematics competitions, summer research experiences, conference presentations and involvement in the mathematics department activities.

Mathematics Competition Recognition Awards These awards recognize student achievements such as:

• scoring in the top 500 of the Putnam Competition,
• strong performance of the Putnam team
• strong team performance in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)
• strong team performance in the Indiana College Mathematics Competition (ICMC,) also called the Friendly Competition or strong individual performance in other regional competitions, such as the Virginia Tech Competition.

Students are given an certificate and a book prize.
