Prereq: Senior Standing or consent of instructor

This course provides an introduction to the process of mathematically modeling a problem, including data collection, defining the appropriate mathematical model and interpreting the results of the proposed model. Emphasis placed on the modeling process, using examples from both continuous and discrete mathematics. The course is specically intended for student doing a senior project for a mathematics major or double major. However any student with a senior standing is welcome

Here we will study various real-world examples and how others have modeled them. Examples of problems that may be studied:

• How are radio frequencies assigned efficiently?
  
• Along which routes should snow removal trucks follow in order to save on fuel expenses?
  
• What strategy should contestants on "The Price is Right"'s Big Wheel game use?

We assume senior standing for this course, so the following background is assumed:

• Calculus and Differential Equations
• Linear Algebra
• Probability
• Discrete Mathematics
