JP 111/112/113 Japanese Language and
Culture I/II/III

 
Pre: Preceding course

    Introduces modern Japanese with an emphasis on spoken language. Teaches basic Japanese pronunciation, hiragana reading, and most commonly used sentence structures. Students will acquire a minimum vocabulary of 350 Kanji (Chinese characters).
 
JP 211/212/213 Japanese Language and
Culture IV/V/VI

 
Pre: Preceding course

Discusses advanced aspects of contemporary Japanese. Examines affective expressions, honorific and humble forms, and male and female patterns. Practices selecting expressions based on actual social situations. Further develops reading and writing skills. Introduces basic grammatical structures of technical Japanese. Begins development of vocabulary necessary for reading technical Japanese.
 
JP 216 Japanese Study Abroad Summer

Pre: Consent of Instructor

Students who take courses in Japanese language and culture abroad may receive credit according to the number of hours of course work. Courses must be approved in advance and evidence of satisfactory completion of the course(s) must be presented.
 
JP 311/312/313 Japanese Language and Culture VII/VIII/IX (Through Study Abroad Program)

 
Pre: Preceding course

Further develops reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students learn technical terms by participating in engineering laboratory with Japanese students. Includes cultural field trips and company visits. [This course is offered as a summer program at Kanazawa Institute of Technology.]
 

 
JP 411/412/413 Japanese Language and Culture X/XI/XII (Through Study Abroad Program)

 
Pre: Preceding course

Develops advanced language communications skills. Presents further cultural aspects of contemporary Japanese. Introduces reading and writing of scientific Japanese. [This course is offered as a summer program through EAGLE-Japan.]
