   History

There are many special features that have combined to create the spectacular design and space that is Hatfield Hall. It is a building that provides wonderful facilities that will benefit the campus community and Rose-Hulman alumni.

Hatfield Hall is a 46,942 square-foot building designed by VOA Associates based in Chicago. It is constructed of steel with an exterior of masonry veneer. The building's theater contains 602 seats of which 434 are on the main floor. The type of seat used is identical to the seating in the Kodak Theater which is the site of the Academy Awards show in Los Angeles. The proscenium, or front of the stage, is 46 feet wide and the stage depth is 30 feet. An orchestra pit is located in front of the proscenium.

Behind the stage and on the south side of Hatfield Hall are rehearsal rooms and other facilities to support student drama and music groups and the productions they stage. The space includes a scene shop, a dressing room large enough to be used as a rehearsal room, and band and chorus practice rooms. Other features include costume, instrument and equipment storage areas as well as showers, restrooms, and a green room. The north side of the building houses administrative offices, conference rooms and a graphic design room for staff in development and external affairs.

The exterior of the rotunda-shaped Alumni Center is Indiana limestone. Features of the Alumni Center include walnut panels leading to a skylight, and polished granite highlights at the entry and at the limestone fireplace. Walnut is featured in the casework, panels, floor and display cabinets.

The Hatfield Hall lobby floor is granite with highlights of polished granite. The floor has hydraulic coils imbedded for heating. The walls are African cherry wood from a single tree. Unique chandeliers with hanging fixtures light the lobby. A creative lighting system outside Hatfield Hall creates a night view that spotlights the building's exceptional architectural features.

This state-of-the-art facility has been made possible by a gift from Michael and Deborah Hatfield. Michael is a Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology alumnus, who graduated with honors in 1984 with degrees in electrical engineering and mathematical economics. The building is named in honor of his parents, Larry and Pat Hatfield of Lake Kiowa, Texas. Hatfield Hall was formally dedicated on November 9, 2002.
