Health
Service
Primarily
interested in the prevention of illness and the treatment
of minor ailments, the Institute maintains a limited health
care service, with a nurse and a physician who keep office
hours on campus five mornings a week. A medical form sent
to all entering students requests a thorough physical examination
and history of immunizations and other background health
information. These records are kept on file in the Health
Service Office.
The
Institute cannot assume responsibility for the regular treatment
of a student's chronic condition present when he enters
the Institute; however, the Health Service will supervise
the treatment and general health while the student is under
the care of the family physician. Ordinarily, drugs and
medicines are furnished free; but certain services, such
as X-ray examinations, special drugs and laboratory tests,
are not available on campus. Rose-Hulman also requires all
students either to show evidence of health insurance coverage
or to purchase such insurance through the Institute.
Counseling
and Advisement
The
entire counseling program is coordinated by the Student
Affairs Office. There is a close working relationship between
that office, resident assistants, academic advisors, and
the faculty. Although in some instances referrals to the
central office are made by the advisor, faculty, and others,
the student is encouraged to visit the counselors in the
central office any time he or she has concerns which might
be mediated by a professional counselor. The student will
find that the nature of any visit to the counseling office
is treated in a highly confidential manner.
Rose-Hulman
also provides professional counseling service through the
Health Office in the Union Building. Students can stop by
the Health Office during morning hours to make appointments
with the counseling staff.
The
Learning Center
The
Learning Center, located in the lower level of the Logan
Library, offers academic assistance in the areas of chemistry,
computer science, math, physics, and writing. Peer tutors-specially
trained students supervised by professional staff-do the
majority of tutoring at the Center, working one-on-one with
students. The Learning Center sponsors special evening sessions
on topics ranging from "Conquering Test Anxiety and
Managing Stress" to "Using PowerPoint for Oral
Reports."
The
Center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every school
day and is open Sunday-Thursday nights from 7:00 to 9:00
p.m. Additional tutoring appointment times and individualized
tutoring schedules are available upon request.
Career
Services and Employer Relations
The
Career Services Office counsels and assists graduates in
securing employment in the professions, business and industry.
It establishes contacts with prospective employers, as well
as graduate schools, aids in the preparation of applications,
and arranges appointments and interviews. The Office also
assists students in obtaining part-time, summer employment,
and cooperative experiences, as well as placement upon graduation.
In addition, the Office assists with resume writing, cover
letters, and employer searches.
The
placement record has been an outstanding one. Over 200 recruiters
come to Rose-Hulman annually to offer a variety of positions.
Each Rose-Hulman graduate has several on-campus interviews
and often more than one job offer from which to choose.
Graduates are currently working in all 50 states and in
20 foreign countries.
Services
are also available to all alumni seeking employment. Employers
seeking experienced personnel file their job needs with
the Career Services Office which, in turn, attempts to match
these needs with the alumni credentials.
Through
continuous contacts with business and industry and communications
with Rose-Hulman personnel, information regarding part-time
jobs on and off campus is recorded in the Career Services
Office. Students seeking part-time employment are encouraged
to contact this office regarding job opportunities.
The
employer relations program provides a well established career
marketplace and continually strives to add new markets for
Rose-Hulman graduates.
