Three football players on Verizon academic all-district team

Three football players earned academic all-district honors as part of the Verizon Academic All-American competition.

Senior defensive back Justin Blomenberg and senior offensive guard Daniel Schwartz earned first-team all-district V honors, while senior offensive tackle Steve Krause was recognized on the second team.

Blomenberg earned All-American honors from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette and Hewlett-Packard after tying a school record with nine interceptions in 1998. In his career, Blomenberg has recorded 283 career tackles, 26 pass breakups and 14 interceptions in 39 consecutive starts. He leads the 2000 squad with 68 tackles as a cornerback. In the classroom, the mechanical engineering major maintains a 3.42 grade point average.

Schwartz started 16 consecutive games on the offensive line before suffering a knee injury earlier this season. He started at left guard in 1999 before moving to right guard this fall. Schwartz opened holes that allowed 2000 graduate Eric Hyten to become Rose-Hulman’s all-time leading rusher and the leading rusher for a quarterback in NCAA III history with 3,315 career yards. He maintains a 3.63 grade-point average in electrical engineering.

Krause started the final 30 games of his career for the Engineers and earned first-team all-SCAC honors following the season. He started at tight end as a sophomore, left tackle as a junior and right tackle as a senior. The versatile Krause ranked third on the team in kickoff returns and has earned two varsity letters on the Rose-Hulman baseball squad as a pitcher and catcher.
