Inventor of voice mail receives Chauncey Rose Medal


Scott Jones, whose contributions to technology have included inventing voice mail, talked about the increasing role of technology in Indiana’s economic future during the annual Oscar Schmidt Memorial Lecture Nov. 7.

Jones also received the Chauncey Rose Medal from Rose-Hulman President Samuel Hulbert.

Jones is chairman and chief executive officer of Carmel-based Escient Technologies. He co-founded Boston Technology, which patented voice-message technology now used by a majority of telephone companies throughout the world. He applies his technical expertise toward merging Internet power and electronic applications and devices in the home and office. He is chair of the Indiana Technology Partnership which is advancing Indiana’s competitiveness in the recruitment and creation of high-tech businesses.

The Schmidt Lecture was founded in 1953 by the Cincinnati Butcher’s Supply Co. in memory of the late Oscar C. Schmidt, a pioneer manufacturer in the meatpacking industry.
