Army ROTC team takes first place in Ranger Challenge

A team of Army ROTC cadets from Rose-Hulman and Indiana State University brought home first-place honors for the first time in the regional Ranger Challenge competition in October at Fort Custer near Battle Creek, Mich. The competition included teams from Purdue University, Ball State University, the University of Notre Dame and IUPUI.

Rose-Hulman’s team posted top marks for marksmanship (135 of 200 points), physical fitness test (2-mile run), grenade throw, construction of a rope bridge and a 10-kilometer road march (in combat uniform). A second-place honor was earned in weapons assembly and disassembly.

The team included Rose-Hulman students Kurt Hoch and William Middendorf, senior mechanical engineering majors; Michael Noonan, a junior mechanical engineering major; and Kevin Waldroup, a sophomore civil engineering major. Andrew Bruce, a junior mathematics education major at ISU, rounded out the group. The team was led by Lt. Col. David Wood.

Noonan had the top score (44 of 50 points) of all cadets competing in the marksmanship contest.
