Winter 1998

Blomenberg named All-American

Sophomore football player Justin Blomenberg was named third-team All-American for his gridiron performance this fall. He also became the first Engineer to earn National Player of the Week honors since Todd Holthaus in 1992, by grabbing four interceptions, recording 10 tackles and blocking one kick in Rose-Hulman’s 42-21 victory over Earlham. He also tied the Engineers’ single-season interception record of nine, set by Gary Ellis in 1976.

Rose-Hulman finished the 1998 football season with a 3-7 record, finishing fifth in the SCAC standings with a record of 2-4.

The Engineers won league games over the University of the South and Millsaps College, and a non-conference game against Earlham College.

Junior quarterback Eric Hyten passed Rose-Hulman graduates Mark Guerrettaz (1992), Tony Broadnax (1989), Rod Schrader (1984), A.J. Wilkerson (1996) and Anthony Hammack (1997) to move into second place on the school’s all-time career rushing list with 2,878 yards. Hyten needs just 236 yards next season to pass Kevin Kingery (1977) and obtain the school’s all-time career rushing record.

Junior defensive tackle Jon Hulsman was named a third-team, all-south region defensive tackle by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. Blomenberg and senior linebacker Bryan Hagelskamp continued Rose-Hulman’s tradition of classroom success by earning second-team academic all-district recognition.
