Rose-Hulman Alumnus New Commander of the Walter Reed Health Care System
Colonel James K. Gilman, a 1974 graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology, has assumed command of the Walter Reed Health Care System
(WRHCS). He replaces Col. Jonathan Jaffin, who will be assigned to the
Pentagon. Gilman's appointment was effective June 21.
As the WRHCS commander, Col. Gilman will be responsible for more
than 600 physicians, half of them who train in more than 40 graduate
medical specialty programs. Walter Reed trains the majority of the
Army's physician subspecialties and trains many nursing and enlisted
medical specialties. Its status as a worldwide referral center for
patients with the most complex and challenging illnesses supports the
high quality of its educational missions and makes it a critical
readiness platform that sustains the capabilities of its clinical staff
who frequently deploy to combat and non-combat operation.
During the past year, Walter Reed has treated more than 3,000
patients from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Also, the center has deployed
more than 100 physicians, nurses, medics and support staff to Iraq to
staff the Combat Support Hospitals in Iraq.
Col. James K. Gilman is a native of Hymera, Indiana. He received a
bachelor of science degree in biology from Rose-Hulman. In 1994,
Rose-Hulman presented him with a Distinguished Young Alumnus Award. He
earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He
is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort
Leavenworth, Kan., and the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.
Col. Gilman previously served as Director, Health Policy and
Services Directorate, Office of the Surgeon General. Before that, he was
Commander, USAMEDDAC, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Other key assignments
include deputy commander for Clinical Services, Madigan Army Medical
Center, Tacoma Washington; deputy commander for Clinical Services, Fort
Hood Texas; chief, Cardiology Service, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort
Sam Houston, Texas. He completed overseas tours in Alaska and Germany
and served with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Haiti.
He completed his internship, internal medicine residency, and
cardiology fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston,
Texas. He completed a fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology
at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, Texas. He
is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, and clinical
cardiac electrophysiology. He is a fellow of the American College of
Cardiology. He has previously held faculty appointments at the
University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio and the
University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Texas A Camp; M University,
College Station, Texas.
Col. Gilman's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit
(with one oak leaf cluster), the Meritorious Service medal (with two oak
leaf clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (with one oak leaf cluster),
the Army Achievement Medal, the Expert Field Medical badge, and the Army
Staff Badge. He is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit and
holds The Surgeon General's "A" proficiency designator.
He is married to the former Jeffri Lynn Sweet of Shelburn,
Indiana. They have three daughters - Sarah, Katy, and Emily.
