Baseball reaches 30-win plateau
for first time
Rose-Hulmans 1999 baseball team enjoyed the
first 30-win season in school history and claimed the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Eastern Division championship in its first season as a league member.
Seniors Andy Cain and Rob Nichols each set five single-season records
to pace the Engineers. Cain earned SCAC Pitcher of the Year honors after setting school
records for strikeouts (132), innings pitched (127), complete games (15), wins (14) and
earned run average (1.42). Cain was a second-team ABCA All-American and a third-team
GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Nichols became Rose-Hulmans career home run king with 18 round
trippers and set career records for batting average (.378), doubles (38), runs scored
(108) and RBIs (116) this season.
Head Coach Jeff Jenkins was honored as the SCACs Tri-Coach of the
Year in postseason balloting. Jenkins shared the honor with Jim Holland of Hendrix and Tim
Scannell of Trinity. |
Track and field
Rose-Hulmans mens track and field squad
placed fifth, while the women placed seventh, in the SCAC Championships held at Trinity
University last April.
Six Rose-Hulman athletes earned all-SCAC honors at the championships. Junior Phil Reksel
claimed the individual championship in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.62 seconds.
Reksel qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor National Championships, after earning
All-American honors with a fifth-place finish at the Indoor Championships in February. |
Tennis teams place fourth at SCAC divisional
tournament
Rose-Hulman hosted the 1999 SCAC Eastern Division
Tennis Championship, placing fourth in both the mens and womens team
competition.
The womens squad showed remarkable progress in 1998-99, improving
to 6-12 after winning just one match in the programs first two seasons. Senior
Marcie Kam led all Rose-Hulman womens players with a 7-7 record, while number one
player Melissa Reading compiled a 7-9 mark.
Freshman Kris Chaney was led the men to a 9-9 record. Chaney compiled a
15-4 record at the number six singles position and a 16-4 overall mark. Freshman Andy
Feyen finished the season 13-8, while senior and number one player Craig Clark finished
above .500 with a 13-12 overall record. |
Golf misses SCAC championship by one stroke
Rose-Hulmans golf squad earned second-place
honors at the 1999 SCAC Golf Championships at Trinity in April, finishing one stroke
behind archrival DePauw University for the league championship.
Head Coach Jim Shaw earned his second consecutive league Coach of the
Year award.
Senior Joe Miller paced the Engineers golf squad with a two-day
score of 153. |
