DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING GOALS

Holistic Education

Electrical and Computer Engineering graduates shall be prepared to practice the profession of engineering using a systems perspective broad enough to encompass technological, economic, ethical, environmental, social, and human issues, shall have demonstrated a facility for independent learning, and shall be prepared for continued professional development.
     

Goal H1:
Each ECE graduate shall have demonstrated a facility for independent learning.
     
Objectives:
(a) Each ECE graduate shall have attended a minimum number of professional
      seminars or presentations.
(b) Each ECE graduate shall be able to perform a literature search using the
      library or Internet and gather information from a variety of sources.
(c) Each ECE graduate shall show an ability to obtain and use technical data
      on components and subsystems.
(d) Each ECE graduate shall know when it is appropriate to utilize resources
      provided by experts.
Goal H2:
Each ECE graduate shall be prepared for continued professional development.
     
Objectives:
(a) Each ECE graduate shall have prepared a personal professional
      development plan.
(b) Each ECE graduate shall be aware of the requirements for professional     
      licensure.
(c) Each ECE graduate shall have an understanding of professional and
      ethical responsibility.
(d) Each ECE graduate shall have participated in discussions or case studies
      in professional ethics.
Goal H3:
Each ECE graduate shall demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively in oral, written, and graphical forms.

Goal H4:
Each ECE graduate shall posses an understanding of how contemporary issues shape and are shaped by engineering, science, and mathematics.

Goal H5:
Each ECE graduate shall be able to understand the role of the professional in the global society and to recognize diverse cultural and humanistic conditions.

Technical Preparation

Electrical and Computer Engineering graduates shall demonstrate technical depth and breadth in their discipline
 

Goal T1:
Each ECE graduate shall have completed a general engineering science core by the beginning of the junior year, and shall have completed a discipline-specific technical core.
     
Objectives:
(a) Each ECE graduate shall demonstrate proficiency in mathematics and science.
(b) Each ECE graduate shall be able to analyze and solve engineering science
      problems using a unified conservation and accounting approach.
(c) Each ECE graduate shall be prepared to pass the Fundamentals of
      Engineering examination.
(d) Each ECE graduate shall demonstrate problem solving skills appropriate
      for an entry-level engineering position.
(e) Each ECE graduate shall complete a series of technical electives at an
      advanced level.
(f) Each electrical engineering graduate shall be prepared to accept a position
      in most of the subdisciplines of electrical engineering.
(g) Each computer engineering graduate shall be prepared to accept a position
      in most of the subdisciplines of computer engineering.
Goal T2:
Each ECE graduate shall have demonstrated the effective use of the contemporary tools of the engineering profession.
     
Objectives:
(a) Each ECE graduate shall be able to process and interpret measurement data.
(b) Each ECE graduate shall be able to select tools for simulation and
      modeling of systems.
(c) Each ECE graduate shall be able to select and use appropriate
      instrumentation to conduct experiments and collect data, and to maintain
      appropriate records.
(d) Each ECE graduate shall be able to verify models and simulations by
      building prototypes.
(e) Each ECE graduate shall be able to select and use appropriate
      computing resources.
(f) Each ECE graduate shall be able to select and learn to use appropriate
      software for a project or assignment.

Design & Professional Practice

Electrical and Computer Engineering graduates shall have participated in design experiences including a comprehensive, industrially-oriented design project, oral presentations, and written communications.
 

Goal D1:
Each ECE graduate shall have participated in team design experiences in which the client is distinct from the faculty supervisor(s).
     
Objectives:
(a) Each ECE graduate shall be prepared to work effectively in teams.
(b) Each ECE graduate shall understand how product design is driven by
      market demand.
(c) Each ECE graduate shall have actively participated in the development
      and writing of product design specifications.
(d) Each ECE graduate shall have participated with team members in
      conceptual design processes and shall have applied formal methods for
      concept selection.
(e) Each ECE graduate shall have participated in a detail-design of an artifact
      or process to meet customer requirements, including construction of a
      prototype where appropriate.
(f) Each ECE graduate shall have participated in formal assessment of the
      design process to assure compliance with customer requirements.
(g) Each ECE graduate shall possess an ability to communicate effectively in
      a team environment.
(h) Each ECE graduate shall have participated as a team member on a
      yearlong design project for an external client.
(i) Each ECE graduate shall have participated in a senior project presentation.
Goal D2:
Each ECE graduate shall have demonstrated the ability to communicate technical material effectively.
     
Objectives:
(a) Each ECE graduate shall have prepared at least one major individual
      concept-oriented technical report or paper.
(b) Each ECE graduate shall have prepared at least one major client-oriented
      group project report.
(c) Each ECE graduate shall have completed formal instruction in technical
      communication.
(d) Each ECE graduate shall be able to assess an audience and write an
      appropriate document.
(e) Each ECE graduate shall have participated regularly in one-on-one
      discussions, team and committee meetings, and client presentations.
(f) Each ECE graduate shall have used formal presentation techniques and
      graphics.
