Happened?
Certain personal information concerning some
Rose-Hulman students was inadvertently
posted to a site accessible to the public
over the internet. Information included
student names, dates of birth, student
identification numbers and social security
numbers.
Was our system hacked?
No. The data were inadvertently posted to a
location accessible to the public. There was
no external breach to any Rose-Hulman
computer system.
Did anyone external to Rose-Hulman use
the data?
There is no evidence that any unauthorized
persons have copied or are using this
information.
What did the college do in response?
The information was immediately removed from
the public site and procedures were started
to notify students, faculty, staff and
parents of students. Rose-Hulman also
notified the Office of the Indiana Attorney
General. All disclosures were done in
accordance with state law. Also, a
Disclosure Hotline was set up along with a
special e-mail address:
privacy@rose-hulman.edu.
What should students do?
Even though there is no evidence the
information was used, there are some easy
steps you can take to help protect yourself
against identity theft or other improper use
of information about you. First, you may
place a fraud alert on your credit file to
let creditors know to contact you before
opening a new account in your name. To place
a fraud alert, simply call or contact any
one of the three major credit reporting
agencies at the phone numbers listed below.
When making the call, you should (1) request
that a fraud alert be placed on your account
and (2) order a free copy of your credit
report.

How safe is my information at this
time?
Student information is very safe. This was
an isolated incident that has been
corrected. Rose-Hulman is committed to
maintaining the privacy of student
information and sincerely regrets any
inconvenience this isolated incident may
have caused.
