Reports
2001-02
The users group was polled on their use of the cluster and OpenMP computing,
additional resources needed and suggestion for training in parallel computing
and promoting high performance computation on campus. The activities are
reported in the table above, the other responses are summarized below.
- Resources and usability
- additional hardware not needed at this time
- install MPI to work with the GSL libraries (no cost)
- implement parallelized Matlab on the cluster (can probably use
institute licence, no additional cost)
- obtain and implement X-window emulator to simplify remote access
to the cluster (Xwin-32 purchased)
- IMSL package would be useful
- consider getting OpenMP C compilers for abacus, sliderule
- Training and promotion
- It might be useful to have a quick intro seminar (a couple of
hours in the fall) to introduce the available tools along with a
few brief presentations by people using them to get an overview
of what is being done with the machines. There very well may be
opportunities for collaboration across the Institute with people
we just have not had the opportunity to meet.
- I think a how-to workshop would be nice, especially if conducted
in a manner where workshop participants actually had to logon and
accomplish a few simple tasks (a powerpoint show won't help much
in my view).
