Texts: Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics, an Applied
Introduction, 4'th edition by Ralph P. Grimaldi
Course Goals
-
further study in the fundamentals of discrete and combinatorial mathematics
including finite state machines, further study of relations, the principle
inclusion and exclusion, generating functions
-
introduce students to applications of these concepts, especially to computer
science
-
improve students' problem solving and modeling skills
-
give students additional experience in using the computer to do mathematics,
especially in discovery learning, and large calculation
-
give students additional experiences in mathematical and technical writing

Chapter 6: Language: Finite State Machines 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, about 1
week
-
Chapter 7: Relations the Second Time Around 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, about
2 weeks

-
Chapter 10: Recurrence Relations, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, about 2 weeks
Course Policies
Grading: The course grade will be based on three in-class tests,
a final examination, assigned work, occasional quizzes, worksheets, some
routine exercises from the text, and projects.
Exams: The tentative dates for the in-class tests are:
-
Test 1: Thursday, Dec 16
-
Test 2: Thursday, Jan 20
-
Test 3: Thursday, Feb 10
The time and place for the final examination will be announced during the
quarter.
Projects: Some challenge problems and projects, to develop your
ability in application, modeling and problem solving with the material
in the course, will be given. These problems will be done as group work.
Project rules will be given out with the first project. There are
2-3 projects of about one week's duration.
Binder: Get a 3-ring binder and keep the following in it: class
notes, routine exercises, quizzes, worksheets, tests and projects. Bring
the binder to class each day. Most handouts will be hole punched so that
you can put them right in your binder. Organize the binder so that the
different components are in different sections. The purpose of the binder
is to help you organize your course materials. The binder will be inspected
periodically for completeness and organization. Some of these exercises
will be collected.
Final Grades: Various components of the course will contribute
to the course point total as follows:
| Tests (100 points each) |
300 |
| Projects |
100 |
| Final Examination |
200 |
| Homework, Worksheets and quizzes |
200 |
| Binder |
50 |
| -------------------------------- |
---- |
| Total |
850 |
Group Work: Some class work and all of the projects will be done
in teams.
-
Be aware of the Rose-Hulman Honor Code and that honesty and integrity in
one's work is of the utmost importance. Inappropriate sharing of work and
information, including electronic sharing, will not be tolerated
-
Note, however that you are encouraged to collaborate with others on homework,
and in class you may be directed to work in groups. If you are in doubt
about what is or is not appropriate just ask me. If you consult others
in your submitted work you must acknowledge their contributions in writing
on the assignments. You will not be penalized for honest collaboration,
but don't just copy.
Attendance: You are to be in class and to be there on time. Following
Rose’s policy on attendance, after 4 unexcused absences you will lose 5%
for each additional unexcused absence.
Computer Policy: Make sure you have Maple V Release 5.1 on your
computer and know how to use them. We will use the computer in class
occasionally. You may use it where appropriate, and . The computer
on a regular basis. The course work will consist of a mixture of paper
and pencil work and computer work. The web pages are given above.
Exam Policy: The hour tests and final exam policies will be determined
and promulgated shortly. The short quizzes will be paper and pencil only,
no other aids.
