Course Summary

This four-credit course will explore the technical side of electronic music synthesis, including topics such as analog synthesis, MIDI, modulation techniques, additive and subtractive synthesis, physical modeling, and sound spatialization. Examples of historically significant musicians, instruments, and compositions will be presented, too. The course does not include a scheduled lab time, but you will still receive plenty of opportunity for hands-on exploration using a variety of software packages (primarily MATLAB), and a multi-week project will give you a chance to explore a selected topic in more detail.
