Driver Installation
(HP)
- (Note, this has been tested on the 2007-08 and 2008-09 freshmen
laptops only. Laptops 2009 and newer have a Microsoft driver already
installed, so DON'T do this.)
- Login as localmgr.
- Download and run the driver installer.
- When prompted to log off, do so, then log back in.
Configure the Bluetooth Software
- Once you log back in, a Bluetooth icon should appear in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. Double-click this icon to run "Initial Bluetooth Configuration Wizard."
- When you reach "Bluetooth Services" make sure that "Bluetooth Serial" is checked.
- Complete the configuration wizard, and click "cancel" to exit setup when finished.
Connecting to the iCreate (we'll do this in class, since it needs a
robot)
- Ensure the BAM is properly connected to the iCreate's cargo bay connector, and
turn on the Create robot.
- For the Microsoft driver (pre-installed on the Fall 2009 laptops and newer):
- Find the Bluetooth logo in your taskbar (lower left one
in this image:
). (It you don't have one, open Bluetooth Devices in the Control Panel, choose the Options tab, and check "Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area")
- Right-click the Bluetooth logo and choose Show Bluetooth Devices.
- Check "Add" and follow the directions in the wizard:
- You should see ones (all the robots in the room) come up that say "Element Serial/new device".
- Right-click and choose properties on each, until you find one with the address that matches the label on the robot's BAM.
- In that properties window, rename it as the name of your robot, like "HanSolo1". (This will make finding it much easier in the future)
- Click Next and in the next screen, choose "Use the passkey found in the documentation" and enter 0000.
- Click Next, and it will discover the hardware.
- Take note of the outgoing Bluetooth COM port (if you are
taking ROBO120, you should write it down on your quiz).
- For other laptops:
- Double-click the Bluetooth logo again to open "My Bluetooth Places." Click "Search for devices in range" to refresh the list of available devices.
- "Element Serial" should appear. If you are doing this in a room
full of robots, there will be many of them! Each robot's
Bluetooth receiver has a serial number printed on a label. Hover
over each "Element Serial" shown until you find yours, and double-click the icon for this device.
- Optional, but helpful: rename yours from ElementSerial
to the name of your robot, like "HanSolo1" by clicking on the name
ElementSerial. (Windows can be a bit touchy with this.)
- "Element Serial on <RobotName>" should then appear. Double-click this icon to connect to the iCreate. Make note of the COM port it assigns
(if you are taking ROBO120, you should write it down on your
quiz).
- The iCreate should now be connected and ready for use.
