We had to learn all about their current product, personally interacting with them on a weekly basis. Many times the collaborations with the client involved negotiation of product requirements, as they didn't really have a clue about software. Many of the things they wanted to do would have taken a year or two in themselves to develop in addition to the actual core product. This included developing specifications, designing the software, implementing the code, testing, and delivery.  I worked at Microsoft where I developed an internal tool from a concept, led a feature crew, and applied for a patent on the algorithms I developed.
