Michael
Mueller has received a $50,000 contract with Hoosier Biodiesel
Company in
Evansville
,
IN
to evaluate a new bio two-cycle engine oil.
Jatropha
(Jatropha integerrima).
Important source for biodiesel.
Michael
Mueller and mechanical engineering faculty member Patrick
Cunningham have entered into an agreement with Hoosier Biodiesel
Company a subsidiary of Imperial Petroleum, Co. to evaluate a
newly developed “green” two-cycle engine oil based on
methyl-esters (biodiesel). The
contracted work will employ 4 students over the summer months to
test the oil via ASTM standards and National Marine
Manufacturers Association (NMMA) engine tests.
The tests will involve chemical properties and physical
properties of the oil including viscosity and lubricity.
Over 100 hours of engine tests will also be conducted.
This work is a first step in a
projected three tiered $500,000 grant project along with the
same company. The
project will include a developing a new biodiesiel based
two-cycle engine fuel blend that will eliminate the need for
two-cycle oils, a new biodiesel/alcohol micro-emulsion based
fuel for diesel engines, and a development of an alternative E85
blended gasoline with biodiesel that will reduce corrosion of
ethanol based gasoline in spark engines.
