TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology volleyball team opened the season with a 17-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-23 victory over IU-Southeast in the first event of the 2011 season on Thursday night.
Senior Karah Hickman (Hobart) and junior Anna Lewer (Indianapolis/Lutheran) led the Engineers with 11 kills each. Senior Morgan Williams (Fenton, Mich./Powers Catholic) joined sophomore Casey Levitt (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) with 10 kills.
Senior Leah Pelzel (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) paced the squad with 30 assists. Sophomore Kira Boswell (Ames, Iowa) pitched in with 16 assists.
Lewer recorded 21 digs and three service aces, with Pelzel also contributing 21 digs. Sophomore Kate Dangel (Upper Arlington, Ohio) pitched in with 20 digs.
Williams added a team-high six blocks, including three solo efforts, to the defensive effort. Hickman and junior Erika McGuire (Indianapolis/Warren Central) tallied two solo and three block assists each.
Rose-Hulman improved to 1-0 on the season, while IU-Southeast dropped to 5-6. The Fightin' Engineers travel to the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis this weekend.
