Men's Track & Field Picked to Defend HCAC Indoor Title

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track and field team has been unanimously selected as the preseason favorite to win its fourth consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field championship, in balloting by league coaches released today.

The Fightin' Engineers captured the 2011, 2012 and 2013 HCAC Indoor Championships and have also won six consecutive conference outdoor titles entering the 2014 season.  On the women's side, Rose-Hulman was picked to finish fifth in a tightly contested middle of the poll.

Junior Stuart West (La Porte) leads the returning conference champions from the 2013 indoor season after setting a conference record in the mile run (4:20.31).  Senior Andrew Thompson (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) and senior Andy Hunkeler (Kokomo/Northwestern) were named the HCAC Track and Field Athletes of the Week after strong performances in the season opening meet last weekend.

Other men's returning conference champions from relay teams last season include senior Clay Becker (Gaylord, Mich./St. Mary Cathedral), junior Jake Kelley (Tecumseh, Mich.) and sophomore Thomas McGuire (Indianapolis/Lawrence Central).

On the women's side, senior Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery (Lafayette, La./Episcopal Acadiana) won the women's mile last year at the conference championship and ran the fastest NCAA Division III nationally so far this season last weekend (5:05.80).
