Rose-Hulman Earns 18 First Place Finishes at T.H. Double Dual

225 Montgomery DoubledualTERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won 13 men's and five women's events against NCAA Division III Manchester University as part of the Terre Haute Double Dual Indoor Track and Field Meet on Friday night at the Sports and Recreation Center.

Indiana State University also recaptured the Coughlan-Malloy Cup for the eighth consecutive year by defeating Illinois State in the NCAA Division I portion of the meet.

The Fightin' Engineers defeated Manchester 102-31 on the men's side, while the visiting Spartans topped Rose-Hulman 69-44 on the women's side.  Indiana State swept the men's and women's competitions over Illinois State by scores of 93-52 and 88.5-56.5.

Rose-Hulman distance runners set two school records to highlight the performance.  Senior Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) topped both NCAA Division I and Division III runners to set a new school record in the mile (5:05.80).  Senior Andrew Thompson (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) added a school record to win the Division III 3,000-meter run (8:35.33). 

The men's squad won 13 of the 14 events to propel the overall victory.  Senior Philip Koranteng (Sterling, Va./Dominion) and junior Austin Schulthies (Dubois/Northeast Dubois) led the way with two individual event victories.  Koranteng won the 60-meter hurdles (8.53) and added a 200-meter dash victory (23.42).  Schulthies won the long jump (20' 8") and the high jump (6' 3 1/4").

Senior Andy Hunkeler (Kokomo/Northwestern) added the third-best weight throw performance in Rose-Hulman history (53' 6 1/2") to win the event.  Freshman Charles Spaeth (Hillsboro, Ill.) helped the Engineers sweep the throwing events by winning the shot put (44' 4 3/4").

Other men's field event winners included junior Dimitrios Valioulis (Thessaloniki, Greece/Anatolia College) in the triple jump (41' 8 3/4") and sophomore Eric Downing (Fort Wayne/Northrop) in the pole vault (13' 6 1/2").

Other running event winners included freshman Adam Wilson (Mecca/Riverton Parke) in the 60-meter dash (7.31); and freshman Brendon Mattiuz (Fishers) in the 800-meters (1:59.83); senior Stuart West (La Porte) in the mile (4:23.75).  The 4-x-400 meter relay team of junior Blake Schulthies (Dubois/Northeast Dubois), freshman Isaiah Smith (Shelbyville), sophomore Thomas McGuire (Indianapolis/Lawrence Central) and junior Jake Kelley (Tecumseh, Mich.) capped the night with a win in 3:31.57.

On the women's side, freshman Christine Harper (Swayzee, Ind./Oak Hill) led the way with two individual event wins.  Harper won the long jump (15' 6 1/4") and the 200-meter dash (28.27). 

Sophomore Sheldan Falls (Mecca/Riverton Parke) earned top honors in the 60-meter dash (8.86 seconds), and sophomore Addie Johnson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) rounded out the winners by capturing the 400-meter dash (1:02.12).

The evening included six Sports and Recreation Center facility records.  Record setters included Indiana State standouts John Mascari in the men’s 3,000 (8:09.39); Carmelia Stewart in the women’s 60 hurdles (8.71); Greggmar Swift in the men's 60 hurdles (7.69); and Katie Wise in the women's 60 meters (7.42).  Illinois State facility record setters included Curtis Jensen in the men’s shot put (63’ 5”) and Akil Mills in the men's weight throw (65’ 11 1/2").

Rose-Hulman travels to the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
