BLOOMINGTON, ILL. - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won three events and recorded 12 top-three finishes at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan Track and Field Invitational on Saturday.
Junior Blake Schulthies (Dubois/Northeast Dubois), freshman Charles Spaeth (Hillsboro, Ill.) and sophomore Dimitrios Valioulis (Thessaloniki, Greece/Anatolia College) earned first-place honors against a strong field including nationally ranked Washington University and traditional powers Illinois Wesleyan and Greenville.
Schulthies won the 60-meter high hurdles in a time of 8.74 seconds, Spaeth captured the shot put with a throw of 45' 6 1/4", and Valioulis won the triple jump with a mark of 42' 1 3/4".
Junior Austin Schulthies (Dubois/Northeast Dubois) added two runner-up finishes. Schulthies placed as runner-up in the high jump (6' 0 3/4") and long jump (21' 0 1/2"). Other second-place finishers included sophomore Joe Carroll (Connersville) in the weight throw (48' 6 1/4") and freshman Nathan Green (Columbus/North) in the pole vault (13' 6").
Rose-Hulman also tallied five third-place finishes on the afternoon. The 4-x-400 meter relay team of sophomore Brandon Bullitt (Lowell), sophomore Eric Downing (Fort Wayne/Northrop), sophomore Brandon Stahl (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and freshman Nate Jackson (King George, Va.) closed the meet with a third-place finish in 3:39.81.
Individual third-place finishers included Downing in the pole vault (13' 5 1/4"); freshman Levi Hartzler (Phoenix, Ariz./Temp Prep) in the triple jump (40' 2 1/4"); freshman Max Kryza (Fenton, Mich.) in the 800-meters (2:08); freshman Connor McClaran (Aurora, Colo./Eagle Crest) in the shot put (43' 2 1/4").
The Rose-Hulman men's and women's track and field teams return to action at the Friday Night Invitational at the Sports and Recreation Center next weekend.
