Men's Tennis Captures First HCAC Regular Season Title

Hendrickson1DEFIANCE, OHIO -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology captured at least a share of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis regular season championship with a 9-0 victory at Defiance College on Saturday.

The championship marks the first conference title in the history of men's tennis at Rose-Hulman.

The Fightin' Engineers completed the HCAC regular season schedule with a 7-1 record.  Both Earlham College and Transylvania University also have one loss in conference play, setting the stage for a potential three-way tie atop the regular season standings.

The upcoming HCAC Tournament, scheduled for April 30 and May 1 in Indianapolis, will determine the league representative to the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament.

Senior Seth Hendrickson (Crawfordsville) (pictured) provided the conference title clinching win with his 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 singles position that provided the fifth and deciding point in the Defiance match.

Other singles winners included sophomore Ben Paras (Tucson, Ariz./Nordhoff) at the No. 1 position; senior David Becerra (Brownsburg/Covenant Christian) at the No. 2 spot; senior Alex Gumz (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) at the No. 3 position; sophomore Devon Fritz (Lakeside, Calif./West Hills) at No. 4; and senior Brent Frizzell (Avon) at No. 6.

Doubles winners included the tandem of Paras and senior Dallas Burton (Haughton, La./Louisiana Math and Science) at the No. 1 spot; Becerra and Hendrickson at No. 2; and Fritz with Gumz at No. 3.

The men's squad joined the women's tennis team as a regular season conference champion in 2010-11.  The women earned a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament in the fall.

"This is a win for the Rose-Hulman tennis family," said Rose-Hulman head coach Dan Hopkins.  "Our men's and women's tennis teams practice together, play intramurals together and are each other's biggest fans.  It's a true Rose-Hulman story, and it's wonderful to see both teams enjoy so much success."

Rose-Hulman improved to 9-7 overall and 7-1 in league play.  Earlier in the day, the Engineers claimed a 9-0 victory over Grand Rapids Community College in an exhibition match.

The Engineers return home on Wednesday with a matchup against Vincennes University.
