TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Orion Martin (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and freshman Ellie Hong (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) have qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving National Championships, scheduled for March 19-22 in Indianapolis.
Martin qualified for the national championships based on his 100-butterfly time of 48.92 seconds. The mark ranks No. 9 nationally according to the unofficial psych sheet released by the NCAA on Feb. 26.
Hong earned a spot in the meet based on two qualifying performances. She ranks No. 9 nationally in the 200-backstroke (2:01.39) and is 20th in the 100-backstroke (56.79).
Sophomore Sam Gould (Greencastle/South Putnam) will hope to join the duo in the diving portion of the championships. Gould will compete at the upcoming NCAA Diving Regional at Denison University on Friday and Saturday.
Both swimmers had strong performances at the recent College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships, with each swimmer earning three all-conference awards. Hong placed second in the 100-backstroke, second in the 200-backstroke and third in the 50-freestyle. Martin won the 100-butterfly, finished second in the 100-freestyle and came home third in the 50-freestyle.
Martin has qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming Nationals for the second consecutive year, and missed honorable mention All-American honors by just one place in 2013. Hong becomes the first women's swimmer in Rose-Hulman history to qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming National Championships.
Additional information will be available when the final, official psych sheet is posted later this month.
Hong and Martin will compete at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, with Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference institution Franklin College serving as event host.
