TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Franklin College split a pair of one-run games at the Engineer Softball Field on Tuesday.
The Fightin' Engineers captured game one by a 4-3 margin, before Franklin won the nightcap 2-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
In game one, freshman Taylor Lockhart (Robinson, Ill./Oblong) scattered 11 hits with two strikeouts to earn the complete game victory. Lockhart earned her second consecutive win to improve to 4-6 on the season.
Offensively, freshman Stephanie Turner (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) had three RBIs to lead the offensive effort. Junior Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) joined senior Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart/Central) and junior Allison Bowman (Fort Wayne/Snider) with two hits each.
Widmoyer tied Jordan Goslee for the career school record in doubles with 34, and Martinek scored twice. Hayley South blasted two home runs to pace the Franklin offense.
In the nightcap, Franklin scored two runs in the seventh to claim a 2-1 victory. Jessica Ayers hit a clutch two-out, two-run double to give the Grizzlies the deciding runs.
Sophomore Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park) tossed a complete-game six-hitter with three strikeouts and Martinek had two hits for Rose-Hulman.
Franklin stands 11-19 overall and 5-5 in league play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 8-17 and 2-6 in conference games. The Fightin' Engineers host Spalding University on Friday at 5 p.m.
