TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Illinois College relied on a strong overall effort to sweep Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 5-2 and 5-0 in a Saturday softball doubleheader.
Sophomore Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park Christian) smashed a double among two hits with one RBI to lead the Rose-Hulman offensive effort in game one. Sophomore Lindsey Watterson (Lexington, Ind./Southwestern) added to the offensive effort with a triple.
Senior Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ill./West) tossed a complete game in the opener with four strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.
In the nightcap, Leah Schumaker tossed a six-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead the Illinois College effort. Alese Speckmart and Paige Meyer added home runs for the Lady Blues.
Freshman Taylor Lockhart (Robinson, Ill./Oblong) and junior Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) had two singles each to lead the Rose-Hulman offense in the nightcap. Lockhart tossed a complete game in the pitching circle for the Engineers.
Illinois College improved to 5-5 on the year, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 4-8. The Fightin' Engineers host Greenville College on Wednesday.
