LEXINGTON, KY. -- Transylvania University relied on a strong pitching effort to sweep Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 9-1 and 3-1 in a softball doubleheader on Saturday.
In the opener, Transylvania scored four times in the third inning to pull away and secure the victory. Amy Hockstedler led the winners with four hits and three runs scored.
Sophomore Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park) and senior Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart/Central) led the Rose-Hulman with two hits each. Widmoyer hit a double and contributed one RBI.
In the nightcap, Transylvania scored twice in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie and earn the final margin of victory.
Jamie Lutes struck out eight and allowed four hits to lead the Transylvania effort. Senior Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ill./West) tossed a complete game and allowed just four hits and two earned runs for Rose-Hulman.
Freshman Jett Bender (Monticello, Minn.) paced the Engineers with two singles in the nightcap.
Transylvania improved to 7-17 on the season and 5-3 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman stands 5-17 and 1-5 in conference games. The Fightin' Engineers host St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Sunday at 1 p.m.
