Softball Battles but Falls at Hanover

bowman-hitHANOVER, IND. -- Hanover College withstood a battle from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to claim a 3-0 and 3-2 softball sweep of the Fightin' Engineers on Sunday.

In the opener, Hanover relied on a one-hit pitching performance from Leah Kemmerer to capture a 3-0 victory.  Danielle Merrick added a home run for Hanover.

Senior Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ill./West) tossed five innings and allowed one run to lead the pitching effort for Rose-Hulman.  Senior Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart/Central) contributed the lone hit.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman battled to within 3-2 in the seventh and outhit Hanover 10-8 before narrowly falling. 

Junior Allison Bowman (Fort Wayne/Snider) had two hits, including a double, and one RBI to lead the Engineers.  Freshman Marissa Stout (Terre Haute/South) pitched in with two singles and one RBI, and junior Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) added a single and scored once.

Sophomore Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park) tossed 5.1 innings and allowed two runs for the Engineer pitching effort.  Christina Davidson picked up the win by allowing one run in 5.2 innings of work with five strikeouts.

Hanover improved to 11-13 overall and 6-4 in league play, while Rose-Hulman stands 10-20 and 2-8 in conference games.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Anderson on Tuesday.
