DECATUR, ILL. -- Millikin University scratched its way to a pair of 1-0 victories over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a softball doubleheader on Monday afternoon.
In the opener, Millikin scored its lone run in the sixth inning. The Big Blue snapped the scoreless tie with a single by Janet Ellis, a fielding error and a single by Rachel Kindred to score the lone run of the contest.
Senior Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart/Central) and freshman Whitney Strain (St. Charles, Mo./Orchard Farm) led the Rose-Hulman offense with two singles each.
Lauren Kitterman struck out seven Engineers and scattered six singles to earn the 1-0 victory. Freshman Taylor Lockhart (Robinson, Ill./Oblong) allowed just one unearned run in the game with five strikeouts to keep the Engineers within striking distance.
In the nightcap, Millikin scored the only run of the game in the first inning. Tess Strang drove home Alyssa Visvardis with an RBI fielder's choice in the opening frame. Hillary Lambert tossed the complete-game two-hitter in the circle.
Sophomore Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park Christian) slapped two singles in the nightcap for Rose-Hulman. Senior Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ill./West) tossed a strong complete game in the circle for the Engineers, allowing just three hits and one run with two strikeouts in the contest.
The Fightin' Engineers placed runners on first and second base in both the sixth and seventh innings in the nightcap, but Lambert was able to coax the key third out to secure the Millikin victory.
Millikin improved to 9-2 on the season, while Rose-Hulman stands 5-13. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Webster University on Wednesday.
