CLERMONT, FLA. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart/Central) tossed a complete game two-hitter to help lead the softball team to its first win of the 2012 season in Florida on Thursday.
Widmoyer's gem helped the Engineers defeat Johnson & Wales 4-0 in the first of two games on the day. SUNY-Canton topped Rose-Hulman 6-4 in the nightcap.
Widmoyer allowed two singles in the fourth inning but otherwise held Johnson & Wales hitless. She struck out five with no walks in the shutout.
Offensively, freshman Jessica Ahlborn (Houghton, Mich./Houghton-Portage Township) slapped two singles with three RBIs to lead Rose-Hulman.
Sophomore Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo.) contributed two singles and one RBI, with Widmoyer helping her own cause with a double and one run scored. Freshman Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park) and junior Kayla Irwin (Farmerburg/North Central) also had one hit and one run each.
In the nightcap, SUNY-Canton held off a late Rose-Hulman rally in the 6-4 victory. Martinek slapped two hits, including a double, with two runs scored and one RBI. Ahlborn also smashed a double and a single in the game.
Freshman Samantha Springer (Irving, Texas/Parish Episcopal) and Widmoyer had two singles each for the Engineers. Irwin added a single, one run and one RBI against SUNY-Canton.
