TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Transylvania University improved to 5-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball action with a 5-4 and 9-4 sweep over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in softball action on Saturday.
Transylvania scored three times in the seventh inning in the opener to rally and earn a 5-4 victory. Emily Hampton led Transylvania with three hits. Michelle Ladanyi slapped two hits, including a triple, and added two RBIs.
Sophomore Allison Bowman (Fort Wayne/Snider) led the game one offense for Rose-Hulman with a two-run home run. Freshman Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park) added two hits, and junior Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart/Central) had one single, one run, one RBI and four pitching strikeouts.
Transylvania relied on three runs in the second and five in the third to earn a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. Hampton had three more hits in the nightcap for the Pioneers.
Junior Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ill./West) slapped two hits, including a double, with two RBIs to lead the Engineers. Heibel and junior Kayla Irwin (Farmersburg/North Central) also contributed two hits.
Transylvania improved to 12-10-1 and 5-1 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman is 6-14 and 2-2 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Blackburn College on Sunday afternoon.
