FRANKLIN, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology softball team claimed the doubleheader sweep as
they defeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin
The Engineers took game one 10-9, overcoming an early 6-0
deficit. The team then came back and took the nightcap
Junior Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ind./West)
led the Engineers in game one with three hits, two runs, and
four runs batted in during the opener. She also hit for a
double and a home run.
Freshman Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Lakewood
Park) added three hits, two runs and two RBI's.
Junior Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart, Ind./Central)
added a triple and scored three runs.
The Grizzlies jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, fueled by a
five-run second inning.
Widmoyer scored the Engineers first run when she crossed
the plate on a passed ball after reaching third on a triple.
The Engineers then added three more runs in the fifth inning
when Mueller hit a three-run home run, scoring Heibel and Widmoyer
to reduce the deficit to 6-4.
Rose-Hulman took their first lead in the game after scoring six
runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Christine Rollins
(Springfield, Ohio/North) doubled to start the
inning and advanced to third with a freshman Rosemary
Yost (North Canton, Ohio/Jackson)
single. After Widmoyer reached first to load the bases,
Heibel singled to score Rollins and Yost and tie the game at
Mueller then doubled to score Widmoyer and junior
Allison Bowman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider)
knocked in Heibel on a groundout to third to take an 8-6
lead. The Engineers added two more runs when Rollins hit a
single to score freshman Lindsey Watterson (Lexington,
Ind./Southwestern) and sophomore Jenna
Martinek (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan) to take a 10-6
Franklin provided a scare in their sixth inning, scoring three
runs with two outs, before Rose-Hulman managed to escape the inning
and take the 10-9 victory.
Game two featured the Engineers scoring four runs in the third
and fourth inning to fuel the team to a 10-4 victory.
Freshman Jessica Ahlborn (Houghton,
Mich.) led the team with three hits, while scoring
three runs and posted a career-high five RBI's. Ahlborn
batted for a double, triple and home run in the effort.
Heibel contributed with three hits and three RBI's with a home
run while Widmoyer added three runs and two batted in. Yost chipped
in with three hits.

In the third inning, Ahlborn doubled to score Widmoyer and
Rollins. Heibel then followed with a home run to give
Rose-Hulman a 4-0 lead.
Franklin answered with a three-run double by Alli
Stropes to make it 4-3.
In the fourth, Widmoyer swatted a double to score Rollins and
Yost and Ahlborn then hit her second home run of the season to
increase the Engineer lead 8-3.
The hosts' added a run in the fifth, but Rose-Hulman answered
with an Ahlborn triple to score Widmoyer and a Heibel single to
score Ahlborn for the 10-4 victory.
Rose-Hulman stands 12-22 on the season and 5-5 in conference
play, while Franklin is now 9-15 and 5-7 in league games
. The victories move the Engineers into
fourth place and the final HCAC Tournament position
with two weeks remaining in the season. Rose-Hulman next
hits the road for Bluffton University on Saturday.
