TERRE HAUTE, IND. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women’s soccer team will hope to build from the momentum of its first win of the season when Marian (Ind.) University comes to town for a nonconference home matchup Wednesday.
The Fightin’ Engineers (1-1, 0-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference), fresh off Saturday’s 1-0 win over Benedictine, will look to avenge last season’s 2-1 setback to the Knights (2-2), as the teams are set for a 6 p.m. rematch at Jim Rendel Field.
Marian returns just two seniors to its 2013 squad, as it looks to replace leading goal scorer Samantha Cook (11 goals in 2012), lost to graduation. Marian finished 6-10-1 overall and 1-8 in the NAIA Crossroads Leauge in 2012. Head Coach Kurt Guldner, in his 16th season at the helm, has led the Knights to wins over Brescia and Lawrence Technological University in 2013.
Rose-Hulman, led by fifth-year coach Amy Helliwell, enters the match with a 36-20 shot advantage over its first two opponents. Sophomore Kate DeMoss (Martinsville, Ind./Roncalli) and senior Nicky Wheeler (Avon, Ind./Avon) lead the Fightin’ Engineers with a goal and an assist, respectively.
R-H sophomore keeper Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) has already tallied 11 saves and one shutout win in 2013. Combs set a Fightin’ Engineers school record with eight shutouts in 2012, en route to conference Freshman of the Year and all-region honors.
Admission to all Rose-Hulman home soccer matches is free.
