ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Nicky Wheeler extended her offensive hot streak with her fourth goal of the season to lift the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women’s soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 road victory over Fontbonne University Tuesday.
With the score knotted at 0-0 late in the second half, Rose-Hulman’s Kate DeMoss (Martinsville, Ind./Roncalli) cleared a ball from a Fontbonne free kick near midfield to junior teammate Haley O’Neil (Batavia Ill./Batavia). O’Neil dribbled the ball down the right side of the field before delivering a perfect cross to a sprinting Wheeler, who one-touched the pass just in front of the post for the game-winner in the 84th minute.
Wheeler (Avon, Ind./Avon) has now scored in three straight games for the Engineers, including a two-goal performance in last Saturday’s 2-1 win over Millikin. O’Neil also picked up her second assist in as many matches, as the Engineers (4-1-1, 0-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) are now winners of three in a row.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) recorded the shutout for the Engineers, as she tallied a match-high seven saves in the tight contest.
Rose-Hulman was able to come away with the victory despite being outshot by Fontbonne, 11-5. Both teams were even in corner kicks with three apiece.
Fontbonne falls to 2-2-2 with the loss.
Rose-Hulman returns to the field with a road matchup at Centre College Sunday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
