wheeler-ccTERRE HAUTE, IND. – After dominating possession for nearly two halves, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women’s soccer team finally broke through with a score with sophomore Kate DeMoss’ goal in the 77th minute to defeat visiting Benedictine 1-0 Saturday at Jim Rendel Field.

DeMoss (Martinsville, Ind./Roncalli) was the recipient of a perfect cross from the right corner from senior teammate Nicky Wheeler (Avon, Ind./Avon), as the sophomore beat the Benedictine back line for a point-blank goal past the Eagles’ goalkeeper to give the Fightin’ Engineers (1-1, 0-0) their first victory of the season.

Rose-Hulman sophomore goalkeeper Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) picked up her first shutout victory win of 2013 with three saves, as the Engineers’ offense kept the ball up front for most of the contest.

The Engineers outshot Benedictine (1-1) by a significant 30-6 margin, as Rose finished the game with its eighth-highest shot total in program history. The Engineers held a 15-3 shot-on-goal margin in the win.

Rose-Hulman nearly added one more goal in the 31st minute. DeMoss sent a free kick to the box to junior teammate Haley O’Neil (Batavia, Ill./Batavia), who sent the ball past Benedictine goalkeeper Abby Gary, but the score was called back due to an offsides call.

The Rose-Hulman Invitational also included a 6-0 victory by Webster over Franklin on Saturday.  The box score link is above.

Rose-Hulman returns to the pitch for another home match Wednesday, when Marian (Ind.) comes to Terre Haute for a 6 p.m. start at the Intramural Field.
