Race1TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Nick Race (Martinsville)  has earned ESPN Men's Soccer Academic All-American honors, in results released today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Race captured third-team accolades for his efforts in the classroom and as a member of the men's soccer squad over the past four years.

The College Division Academic All-American team includes three squads of 11 student-athletes each out of more than 800 schools in the NCAA Division II, III, NAIA, Canadian and junior college ranks.

Race becomes the 87th Academic All-American in Rose-Hulman athletics history and claimed the fifth award in men's soccer.  Matt Trowbridge captured first-team honors in 2007 and third-team accolades in 2006.  Mark Schulz earned second-team honors in 1990 and was named third-team in 1989.

At least one Rose-Hulman student-athlete has earned Academic All-American honors for the last 25 years, the sixth longest streak among all NCAA Division I, II or III institutions.

Race started at defender in 17 matches this season with one goal against Millikin University.  His career includes 66 appearances with 47 starts, three goals, four assists and 10 points as a Rose-Hulman defender.

Race competed on a team that recorded four consecutive winning seasons during his playing career.  The Fightin' Engineers have compiled a 26-3-4 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matches over the past four years, with league championships in 2008 and 2009.

Race holds a 3.95 grade point average as a biomedical engineering major.  Academically, Race is a Heminway scholar, member of the Tau Beta Pi honorary fraternity and serves as president of both the Biomedical Engineering Society and the Triangle fraternity.
