TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Freshman teammates Ben Lyon and Tyler Blankenship connected for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men’s soccer team’s lone goal and the Engineers’ defense held off Millikin University in the second half to preserve a 1-0 victory Saturday at the Intramural Field.
Lyon (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) connected on his second goal of the season in the 55th minute of Saturday’s contest, aided by a perfect pass in front of the goal from Blankenship (Roanoke Va./Hidden Valley).
With a one-on-one situation with Millikin goalkeeper Daniel Sinclar, Lyon’s shot found the top right corner to give the Fightin’ Engineers (2-1-2, 0-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) a one-goal lead early in the second half.
Rose-Hulman junior keeper Drew Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) kept the Big Blue (0-5) at bay late, as he made several pivotal stops to preserve his third shutout of the season to go along with four saves.
The Fightin’ Engineers outshot Millikin 16-5 and held an advantage in corner kicks, 6-2.
Sinclair recorded five saves for Millikin.
Rose-Hulman returns to play Wednesday when the Engineers travel to Fontbonne for a nonconference contest. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. (CT).
