Rose-Hulman Defeats Earlham; Keeps HCAC Tournament Hopes Alive


Vatterodt2RICHMOND, IND. --Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology kept their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament hopes alive with a 2-1 victory at Earlham College.

The Engineers scored their first goal with a penalty kick in the 45th minute by senior Mitch Buffington (O'Fallon, Ill.) after junior Clint Vattorodt (Bloomington, Ill./University) was brought down inside the box. 

After Earlham tied the game 1-1 in the 65th minute, Paul Bouagnon (St. Charles, Ill./Burlington Central) scored the game winning goal for Rose-Hulman off a pass from freshman John Munson (Bloomington, Ill./University) in the 82nd minute. 

Rose-Hulman outshot the Quakers 8-6, led by Buffington, Vatterrodt and Bouagnon each getting two shots. 

Junior goalkeeper Eric Davenport (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded two saves on the day to pick up the victory.

The Engineers are now 7-7-4, 4-2-2 in conference play while Earlham fell to 7-10, 4-4 in the HCAC.  The Engineers now need to win at Defiance at Saturday and also need a loss by Franklin or a loss or draw by Manchester to make the HCAC Tournament.
